Welcome to my first blog! In writing the content for my new website, themes around kindness, accountability and leadership kept tumbling onto the keyboard. Once I saw it written in the “About Me” section I realised was trying to say something which felt (and still feels) really important but that it was more akin to a blog than everyday web content. This blog comes straight from both my heart and head – it is my very core.

So here goes… it’s about kindness, leadership and success.

It’s absolutely apparent to me that in order to be successful as an individual or organisation we need to be kind – first and foremost. Kind to ourselves and each other. Kind in every way. And that doesn’t mean we don’t also hold standards for accountability and responsibility or that we don’t care about the success of the individual or business. We can (and must) do both.

Being kind is not the whole answer for business or personal success – but without it, real success over the longer term is, in my view, absolutely unlikely. Those who don’t fully understand or place value on practicing kindness may see it as something to be suspicious of, wary about, unnecessary (perhaps even unwise) and disregard it as being ‘soft’ (as though that’s a ‘bad thing’) and not business-like or in the best interests of the business. I couldn’t disagree more. There are many papers written about leadership of what I call ‘head and heart’ and we will come back to these in future blogs. It’s also content I bring to my workshops and consulting work.

It is possible (and necessary) to be both kind and focus on business outcomes at the same time. I think they are mutually dependent. Throughout my career, I have had the great privilege of working with, and learning from, a small number of soft-strong-successful (‘head and heart’) leaders. I have observed that their success was largely as a result of being able to focus on both ‘head’ and ‘heart’ of the organisation, the business model and the people.

My view of an effective leader is one who has the both the courage and ability to show kindness while also holding high standards and expectations in relation to organisational goals, success and effectiveness. For those who step in to this and ‘own it’, it can feel like a lonely and sometimes unsafe place – there’s definitely more blogs in this one…

If you’d like to explore how you can bring ‘head and heart’ – business skills and kindness into your work-life, I would love to talk to you!
